About Avoca
Healthcare operations run on technology that was never built for how patients expect to access care today. 1 in 5 Australian patients abandon calls to their preferred clinic because of long wait times. That's care delayed, revenue lost and reception teams stretched thin.
Avoca Systems is building the AI operating layer to transform healthcare administration and patient access. We're a Y Combinator company already working with some of the largest enterprise healthcare organisations in Australia, and we're seeking new team members to accelerate our impact.
The role
We're looking for an ambitious Senior Software Engineer to help build Avoca across product and infrastructure. You'll join a small engineering team where your decisions shape what we build, how we build it and how the team works as we grow.
You'll own problems from the first customer conversation through to production. That means understanding what a clinic needs, working out the right solution, making technical decisions and shipping software that holds up in the real world. You'll work closely with product, the founders and our partner clinics, with the context and trust to make decisions and move quickly.
We're looking for someone who wants the responsibility of building a company as well as a product. Someone who spots what needs doing, gets others moving and follows through until the problem is solved.
What you'll do
- Own problems end to end. Take product work from discovery and technical design through release and iteration. Stay close to whether it solves the customer's problem.
- Build across the stack. Develop customer-facing experiences, backend services and integrations connecting AI with the systems clinics rely on.
- Make sound technical decisions. Choose simple approaches, understand trade-offs and know when to move quickly or invest in stronger foundations.
- Keep production dependable. Build in testing, observability and security. Investigate failures, fix root causes and own how your software behaves after launch.
- Get close to customers. Work with product and clinic teams to understand workflows, question assumptions and find opportunities beyond the spec.
- Raise the engineering standard. Give thoughtful feedback, share what you learn and improve the codebase and development process. Help us ship faster while keeping systems maintainable.
What you bring
We care more about what you've built and how you think than your title, credentials or years of experience.
- A track record of shipping useful software and taking responsibility for it in production. You can explain the decisions you made, the trade-offs and what you learned.
- Strong full-stack engineering skills, including TypeScript, React and backend development.
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure, databases and external APIs, and enough depth to debug problems across system boundaries.
- Product judgment: you ask why something matters, challenge unnecessary complexity and find the smallest solution that does the job well.
- The ability to turn an ambiguous problem into a clear approach and carry it through with minimal guidance.
- Clear communication. You can explain technical decisions, surface risks early and work through disagreements constructively.
- Curiosity and a fast learning loop. You're hands-on with AI development tools and bring your own judgment to the code and systems you ship.
You don't need a healthcare background. You do need the drive to learn a complex domain and care about the people relying on what you build.
How you'll work
This is an early-stage role with real stakes. The team is small, the product is live and there's plenty we haven't figured out yet. It's probably for you if you say yes to these:
- Do you move before you're asked and fix things you didn't break?
- Can you go from shaping a technical approach to tracing why a patient's booking failed in the same afternoon?
- Do you ask whether a feature should exist before deciding how to build it?
- Can you ship a simple solution quickly, then recognise when it's time to strengthen the foundations?
- Do you want to help build the engineering team and its habits as much as the software?
Why join Avoca
- Help define a new kind of product. AI is changing how patients access healthcare and how clinics operate. You'll work on problems that are only now becoming possible to solve.
- Have a direct hand in the company. We're early enough that your technical decisions, product ideas and approach to engineering will shape Avoca for years to come.
- Build for real use. Our software serves enterprise healthcare organisations. You'll see your work turn into more patients booked, less administrative work and better access to care.
- Grow through responsibility. You'll have room to take on bigger problems as you deliver, with direct access to the founders and a team that shares what it knows.
It won't be easy. Healthcare is complex, expectations are high and the work will take you beyond a neatly defined engineering brief. You'll be trusted to make decisions, expected to follow through and surrounded by people who pitch in on whatever needs doing.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity
- Real ownership of a live product with enterprise customers
- A small, ambitious team to learn from and grow with
If you want to build things that matter and take real responsibility for making them work, we'd love to meet you.
